Starting Year with SAMS: 2018
Calling to Ministry: Richard’s and Catherine’s call to serve at Uganda Christian University evolved over several years. They began to host UCU law students in their home annually when the students visited Washington, D.C., to participate in international mock trial competitions. Each year, the Rangers made and nurtured new friends among these students. One day, a friend who had served as a professor at UCU invited them to consider serving there themselves. Mission and Vision for Ministry: Richard and Catherine will serve at Uganda Christian University’s Faculty of Law. Catherine will serve in The John Sentamu Institute for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. Her vision is to support students and faculty in their Christian call as advocates, so all Ugandans, even “the least of these,” are seen as entitled to dignity and to justice.
Working with law faculty colleagues, Richard will apply his 40-year career in energy and resources to benefit the teaching of resource development and environmental law. Richard's vision is to encourage students’ rigorous inquiry into development issues from a Christian ethical perspective. He desires to prepare law faculty graduates for leadership roles in the global economy.
Personal Points of Interest: Richard is an avid reader of history and biography, and the call to serve at UCU has driven him to focus on African history. He loves the out-of-doors, photography, and jazz, classical, and world music. Catherine enjoys cooking and working with her hands, particularly needlepoint, and occasionally sewing. She enjoys reading history, theology, and memoirs.
